Ginny was thrilled when Naomi told her that Ruth’s household furnishings had been given to a needy family. “Well done. Sure, Ruth would be pleased to know where her things have gone. She was right to leave the decisions up to that grandson of hers. She used to talk about him all the time, you know.” Ginny’s brogue streamed into a rapid blur of speech while she set the table for dinner.

Naomi sat in the dining room. Tired as she was from helping Keith, she wanted to put finishing touches to the drawing she’d done of the B and B’s proprietress, and one of Ginny’s husband, too.

On her way to the kitchen Ginny sneaked a glimpse at the finished drawing. “My, but you’re brilliant. Russell and I’ve already decided, once these are framed we’ll hang them in the hallway for all to see. It’s a real feather in our cap to have such a famous artist staying with us.” But with the humility that kept Ginny’s feet firmly on the ground, she didn’t waste any time admiring her own likeness.

She returned with a stack of plates and set them on the sideboard. “And I was talking to my mother today. She’s much better, and wants to see you and that grandson of Ruth’s before you both return to the States. It would do her heart good, now that her old friend has gone on.”

Naomi looked up. “She wants to see Keith and me?”

“Aye. Can you squeeze it in before you go home? It’s only an hour’s drive. It would give my mother a real boost when she’s feeling a mite fragile.”

“Of course, I’d love to visit her. I can’t speak for Keith, but I’ll call him after dinner.” The desire to be in his company—and on the coast—was too hard to resist. He had to remember what happened the last time they’d been to the coastline five years ago. Her own pulse thrummed with the memory.

“From what Ruth used to say about him,” Ginny continued, “I’m sure he’d want to give a bit of joy to an elderly lady. She said that of all her grandchildren, Keith was the one who always had his head on straight. No one had a bigger heart. She used to worry sick over Garrick and Sandra.” Ginny flicked a tea towel at a crumb on the crisp, white linen tablecloth. “Aye, the times she and I used to pray together for our offspring.”

“You mentioned before that your mother and Ruth grew up together.”

“Yes, Mother and she were best chums from girlhood. Only time they were apart was after Ruth went to London during the war, and after Mother moved to Bushmills a few years ago.”

“How lovely. As girls they must have shared everything. All their hopes and dreams. Their loves.”

This captured Ginny’s attention. “Oh yes. But a lot of time passed, and they both lived to be great-grandmothers, still sharing each other’s confidences.”

A sigh escaped Naomi. “I feel a bit that way, too, as if I’m sharing some of Ruth’s confidences.
